Son of a New Zealand diplomat, educated at Wellington College, Otago University, Victoria University, and Sussex University, he has worked at the Institute of evelopment Studies (Sussex University), the World Bank, Princeton University, MIT, and Brown University; and has done field work in Pitcairn Island, Italy, India, South Korea, Taiwan and inside the World Bank. His book Governing the market (1990, 2004) won the American Political Science Association's Best Book or Article in Political Economy, 1989-1991.
