Chhem is director of the Division of Human Health at the International Atomic Energy Agency. He taught radiology at the University of Sherbrooke, McGill University, and University of Western Ontario in Canada and at the National University of Singapore. He was the former Chair of radiology and nuclear medicine at the University of Western Ontario. His current research encompasses the history and philosophy of medicine and science with a focus on medical imaging, paleoradiology, history of medicine in Southeast Asia and history of Angkorian medicine.
