Qi GongQi Gong (1912-2005), named Yuan Bai, and also known as YuanBo, was born in Beijing on July 26th, 1912. From childhood, Qi Gong underwent a strict enlightenment education and was exposed to positive moral influences. In 1933, through the introduction f Fu Zengxiang, he met with the president of Fu Jen University, Mr. Chen Yuan. Mr. Chen had a sharp eye, and seeing his great potential, recommended him to Fu Jen secondary school as a Chinese teacher, later offering him a teaching post in the Department of Fine Arts, and the Mandarin Department, at Fu Jen University. After the founding of new China, he taught classic literature at Beijing Normal University. During his 70 years' of teaching, he cultivated a large number of classical literature professionals, and became a highly-respected senior educator. Qi Gong loved painting and calligraphy from a very early age. His paintings have characteristics such as: 'Searching out the emotions of the painting with scenery; with new and interesting scenery, as well as a natural style, it opens to a large space and is worthy of long-term appreciation.' His calligraphy has a unique style and was praised by the calligraphy community as, 'the calligraphy of scholars, of poets, with elegance and ancient rhyme'. Qi Gong was also a contemporary poet with his own unique style, who sought to, 'express his own feeling with his hands'. Many of his calligraphic works and paintings contain his own poems and writing, the greatest of the 'Three Contemporary Excellences'. He was also skilled in identifying painting and calligraphy. Before the liberation, he was among the members of the National Palace Museum special committee, which was responsible for the review and identification of cultural relics at the Literature Museum. He was a deeply knowledgeable cultural relics identification expert. He served as member of the Standing Committee of the CPPCC, director of the National Cultural Relics appraisal committee, director of the Central Literature and History Research Institute, consultant of the Jiu San Society, chairman and honorary chairman of the Chinese Calligraphers Association, consultant of the Chinese Buddhist Association, the National Palace Museum, the National Museum, and as the director of Xiling Printing Society.
