Peter PetroDr. Peter Petro, the translator, is currently an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Central, Eastern, and Northern European Studies at the University of British Columbia. Born in Slovakia, he began his studies at the Comenius University in Bratilava and continued his studies at the University of British Columbia earning his B.A.in 1970 and a M.A. in Russian literature in 1972. At the University of Alberta he earned his Ph.D. in 1978 in comparative literature. In 1977 he was appointed to teach Russian language and literature at UBC, and later became Chair of the Program in Modern European Studies. He taught Russian language and literature as well as in Slavic literatures in translation. He is the author of several books including a translation of the prize-winning novel by Milan Simecka, The Year of the Frog (1993) and a translation of Alexei Fulmek's Dispatches from the Home Front (2000).
