His days in India ended with two years of organizing social welfare services in the slums of Madras City. Returning to the United States in 1969, he worked until his retirement in 1987 as an environmental planner engaged in a Clean Water Act project to put out the fires in the Cuyahoga River and bring Lake Erie back to life.
