Naoshi KoriyamaNaoshi Koriyama was born in 1926 on an island named Kikajima in the Amami chain of islands between mainland Japan and Okinawa. He graduated from Kagoshima Normal College in 1947 and from Okinawa Foreign Language Schoolin 1949. He studied at the Univesity of New Mexico 1950-51 and the New York State College for Teachers at Albany, 1951-54 (B.A.). While in Albany, he started writing poetry in English, rather than Japanese. He taught English and poetry at Toyo University in Tokyo, 1961-1997. His publications include: LIKE UNDERGROUND WATER: THE POETRY OF MID- TWENTIETH CENTURY JAPAN, co-translated with Edward Lueders (Copper Canyon Press, 1995, and Beautiful Amami Folk Songs, translations from the Amami language into Japanese and English (Hokuseido Press, Tokyo, 2001).
