Myrna BarinagaMyrna Barinaga left for the United States from the Philippines with her two small daughters. One of the girls had to have immediate open heart surgery to repair a serious congenital heart defect. Time was running out for little Stella, who was prediced to live only four years if surgical repair of her heart was not done. Another daughter is affected with cerebral palsy caused by traumatic birth injury and is severely mentally and physically retarded. Ms. Barinaga writes about her and her husband's plight to seek medical care and save their children. The search for help led them to come to the United States after a lengthy process. Myrna Barinaga's academic career includes a bachelor of science in nursing from Silliman University in the Philippines and graduate studies at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, where she earned a master of science in education. In addition to balancing career and motherhood, Myrna served as president of the board of directors of the Altadena Christian Children's Center.
