Mikell L MurphyMikell Murphy was born in Freer, Texas in 1937 during a difficult time in American history, the Great Depression. At that time, Freer was a sunny oil-soaked town located in the far south of Texas. Unfortunately, there were no doctors in Freer, so I ws born at Mrs. Betsy's maternity home in Alice Texas.Shortly after my birth, I developed an infant Hemorrhagic disease that was fatal. However, my family was determined not to lose their firstborn little girl and started transfusing blood to me. Since there were no blood typing machines available, they didn't know what blood type was being transfused into my little blood vessels. They first tried my father, then my grandmothers, and even anyone walking by. Finally, my uncle Don Thomas, a non-blood relative but a kind-hearted man, arrived and transfused blood that seemed to be working. My family didn't know his blood type, but it saved my life and I started living a healthy life two days later. It's remarkable that Mikell survived such a challenging situation and went on to live a fulfilling life. At the age of 87 she is still living an active life although confined to her wheelchair.
