Michelle became a breast cancer advocate through the Advocacy & Science Training run by the National Health & Medical Research Council. She is the founder of Dragons Abreast Australi, Inaugural Executive President of the International Breast Cancer Paddlers Commission (IBCPC). Michelle is a founding member of NT Breast Cancer Voice, a former State Representative for Breast Cancer Network Australia, and has served on the National Breast Cancer Foundation Consumer Advisory Panel. Awarded the Order of Australia in 2008 for her contribution to women's health, Michelle was also the first female to be awarded Life Membership of the Australian Dragon Boat Federation.
