Michelle BenegasMichelle Benegas, Ph.D., is an associate professor in the TESOL program at Hamline University in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Her TEDX Talk entitled Confessions: New Teacher of Newcomers tells of her early experiences teaching ESL to Minnsota's newcomer population. In addition to her work in ESL teacher preparation, she is the principal investigator of the ELM (English Learners in the Mainstream) Project, a US Department of Education funded initiative that seeks to ensure that all teachers are prepared to meet the needs of English learners. Co-author of Teacher Leadership for School-Wide English Learning (TESOL Press), Benegas has prepared over 400 ESL teacher leaders in Minnesota and across the country. Her research interests include anti-oppressive language education methodologies, ESL teacher leadership, and systemic approaches to improving services for multilingual learners.
