Michael H WoodDr. Michael Wood is the Director of the Bariatric Surgery Program at the Detroit Medical Center (D MC), Harper University Hospital and is Clinical Professor of Surgery at Wayne state University. He is board certified by the American Board of surgery nd has over 25 years of surgical experience with an extensive background in weight loss surgery and advanced laparoscopic surgical procedures. He has performed over 6000 weight loss surgical procedures and has devoted a large portion of his medical career to the study and treatment of obesity and weight loss strategies. His clinical interests include minimally invasive surgery (laparoscopic and robotic), performing a host of different types of bariatric surgical procedures. He is an active member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of surgeons. Dr. Wood has authored many articles related to obesity and bariatric surgery. He has a passion for treating obesity and its disease processes; including physiologic consideration, dietary factors in gastrointestinal disease, and strategies for prevention of obesity. He has received research grant funding for the study of the effects of endogenous opiates on gastric acid secretion. He is co-inventor of the patented Sapala-Wood Micropouch(TM) gastric bypass procedure. His collaboration includes, colleagues in the Division of Endocrinology, Wayne State University, studying the differential gene expression of inflammatory cytokines in the fat cell.
