Max Blecher

Max BlecherMax Blecher (1909-1938) was born in Botoşani, Romania. Leaving for Paris to study medicine, he soon became ill and was diagnosed with spinal tuberculosis at the age of 19. After spending six years in various sanatoria, he returned to his hometow and began to write his novels, as well as corresponding with some of the leading artists and intellectuals of the day. Often described as "hallucinatory" and "nightmarish," Blecher's writing is a kindred spirit to Surrealism and a major contribution to the 20th-century European avant-garde. Read More Read Less
