After leaving the cloister, her next meaningful step was into a religious community of women dedicated to teaching. Upon leaving that community, she continued to teach-no longer as a member of a community, but as termed a lay person, in distinction to being a nun who teaches school. That career was followed by returning to school and acquiring a doctoral degree in psychology. The final years of her professional life were as a psychologist in a state prison.
