Martin H. Manser received a BA Honours degree in linguistics afterstudying at the Universities of York, England, and Regensburg, Germany, and went on to gain an M Phil degree for research into the influence of English on Modern German. Since 1980 he has written and worked on over 100 reference books, including The Penguin Writer's Manual, Chambers' Dictionary of Synonyms and Antonyms, the Macmillan Student's Dictionary, The Guinness Book of Words, The Wordsworth Dictionary of Eponyms, and A Dictionary of the Bible.
