Martess DowlingBorn in Malta in 1961, and two years later immigrated to Australia to the seaside suburb of Glenelg with her parents, this is where she loved to watch the activity along the beach and developed a fascination with people. Throughout her early school lfe, she loved to draw, be creative and organise school plays. She became involved in the school newspaper in high school, and encouraged by Mrs Jerome, her love of writing grew. Meeting and marrying her beloved husband, Alan, they spent nine years in the mining town of Broken Hill, New South Wales, where her creative flair came to the fore. She established a cake- decorating business, culminating in her taking out awards in three states - New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia - then took out a national title before having her prize-winning cake featured in the Australian Women's Weekly. Martess had a beautiful baby boy after she and Alan moved to Adelaide. When he began school, she worked in retail, on a tarot line, sewing wedding dresses, then became a marriage celebrant and loved every second.
