By analyzing current popular media productions (reality TV, television dramas, social media, etc.) paired with an Afrocentric historical and cultural lens, her research demonstrates how the continued misrepresentations of Black womanhood and Black families in the media and society in general can be predictive of future public policy initiatives that endanger the freedom and liberties of African Americans. Marquita Gammage was raised in the 9th ward community in New Orleans, Louisiana and her experiences led her to yield an unwavering commitment to researching issues impacting the Black community. Since then she has diligently researched media portrayals of Black women and continues to publish highly referenced peer reviewed books, articles, and book chapters.
