He received his B.A. from Pomona College in Asian Studies and his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from UCLA. He is the author of Proving theWay: Conflict and Practice in the History of Japanese Nativism (Harvard Asia Center, 2005). He has been a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Edwin O.
