This awakening brought about a permanent shift of identity and I never again thought of myself as being my body. After that awakening a spontaeous knowing of our true nature arose, even while living open-eyed in the world. But then, because I was not completely clear of subconscious conditioned thoughts, I was plunged back into the darkness of ignorance. I lived for many years with intense emotional pain and mental confusion. During those years I gained an intimate knowledge of what it is to yearn for liberation and freedom from su ering. That experience gave birth to a deeply felt compassion.
