Khrystal RobinsonI was born Khrystal Rhea Robinson June 12,1981 in Fort Worth Texas. Everyone calls me Khrys (except for my mom) I was always the shy child but always extremely active. I grew up during the time where you played outside with the neighborhood kids unti the street lights came on. I grew up during the time when climbing trees or doing gymnastics in your Grandmother's front yard came before playing video games. I kept myself busy with imaginative play and sports activities. I was an only child so I learned quickly how to keep myself entertained. My mind has and always will be my happy place. Spinning stories and scenarios out of thin air became a way for me to unwind.I graduated from the University of North Texas with a bachelors degree in Child development and family studies. I went on to become a milieu therapist at Children's Medical Center in Dallas for a little over a year. From there I became a nanny and have been happily assisting children and households for 15+ years. Being able to work with children on their level is my passion. After years of reading books upon books to children with main characters that focused on animals or children that lacked diversity; I knew that I wanted to create something special. 8 years ago I penned my first manuscript for little readers. I wanted to create a series with characters that little brown children all over the world could see themselves in. I wanted to create a series that encourages little black and brown kids to love and embrace who they are and love their natural beautiful qualities. I wanted to encourage them to stand proud in their uniqueness. I wanted to create a series that complimented wonderful stories like "Hair Love" by Matthew A. Cherry, or "Fancy Nancy" by Jane O'Conner. Measure up to the creativity of "Ada Twist Scientist" by Andrea Beaty. Show representation like "Love my Hair" by Natasha Anastasia Tarpley and be remembered like the amazing story telling of "The Snow Day" by Ezra Jack. This is important because black and brown children should hav a number of books to choose from where they are represented in a positive light. A book where they see that they are a standard and not forgotten, I want them to feel as important as their peers. I want them to see that they are greatness. When I was growing up, there wasn't a huge selection of books to choose from that had main characters that looked like me. A lot of the books had no one of color and if they did, they were just a part of the supporting cast. In the past 5+ years there has been an explosion of great works where children of color are the main characters, and I want to add to this magical movement of black representation. I want to contribute my character Bella into this greatness because she is a voice that needs to be heard. Read More Read Less
