Keith LaumerAmerican science fiction novelist Keith Laumer was born on June 9, 1925, and passed away on January 23, 1993. He served as an officer in the US Air Force and a diplomat in the US Foreign Service before turning to writing full-time. His older brother arch Laumer, who is also a writer and is featured in Laumer's The Other Side of Time, is well-known for his adult retellings of the Land of Oz. Their youngest brother, Frank Laumer, is a historian and author. Keith Laumer was created in Syracuse, New York, in 1925. He studied at Indiana University from 1943 to 1944 before enlisting in the American Army Air Forces to fight in Europe during the Second World War. Later, he studied at Stockholm University from 1948 to 1949 before earning his bachelor's in architecture from the University of Illinois in 1950. After moving back to Florida in the late 1950s, Mr. Laumer bought a modest, two-acre island on a lake in Hernando County not far from Weeki Wachee. There he would spend the remainder of his days.
