Juan D ValderramaJuan D. Valderrama is a chemical engineer from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia (2002). In 2005, Juan graduated with a M.Sc. in environmental engineering, doing research on UASB bioreactors for the treatment of wastewater. Also, Valderrama graduaed with a M.Sc. (2010) and a Ph.D. (2012) in chemical and biomolecular engineering from Cornell University (USA). His work at Cornell University was focused on a second research area related to therapeutic protein glycosylation in vivo using Escherichia coli as a host. In 2012, Juan returned to UAN (Colombia) as an assistant professor for the environmental engineering program. By 2016, Juan had become the leader of the local research group (GRESIA). With respect to laboratory work, he focused on biorefinery systems for the treatment of wastewater and the production of biofertilizers and methane. At the molecular level, Juan uses protein and metabolic engineering to encapsulate recombinant proteins in vesicles from the outer membrane of Escherichia coli, with applications in vaccine development and antimicrobial formulations.
