Joseph Elias HayneDr. Joseph Elias Haynes (1848-1911), was a former slave, colored leader, preacher, physician, author, and close student of ethnology. Born a slave in South Carolina, served in 104th Regiment of Colored Volunteers during Civil War, graduated from Atlata University and Howard University. Worked in the US Printing Office in Washington DC, and was a county school commissioner in Charleston. He studied medicine and became a physician in 1894.
