Jorge SorgerJORGE G. SORGER, Professor Emeritus of Genetics and Microbiology at McMaster University in Canada, was born in 1937 in Vienna and fled Nazi Austria as an infant with his mother. The family was reunited in Venezuela after five years and became Venezuean citizens. During his years in Venezuela he witnessed the suffering of third-world poverty, the struggle for social justice, the euphoria of democracy and the disappointment of a return to dictatorship. Jorge obtained his BSc in Genetics and Microbiology at McGill University and his PhD in Microbiology and Genetics at Yale University, where he married Leonor Tenorio Vargas. Jorge and Leonor are long-time activists who were founding members of Amnesty's Group #1 in Canada and other organizations.
