John MakowskyBorn in 1950 in Norwalk, CT, I am a 4th generation commercial fisherman.I grew up in Rowayton CT, a small river town on Long Island Sound, spending most summer days in small boat fishing, crabbing, eeling, and exploring the local waters. At a young ae, I worked alongside my father, Roy, on his lobster boat whenever the opportunity was offered.I attended Rowayton Elementary School and Brien McMahon High School in Norwalk and in 1968 went off to Castleton State College in Vermont, where I majored in History and Sociology and received an Education degree. While in Vermont, I developed a love for the outdoors, the mountains and skiing and began teaching skiing. After graduation from Castleton, I split my time between the sea and the mountains: working as a commercial lobsterman and developing my second passion: skiing.Marriage to my sweetheart Deborah came and together we raised two daughters and are now blessed with five granddaughters.A lobster die-off in the Long island sound forced a huge change and we moved to Newburyport MA where I took an office job for the first time in my life. Fortunately, this didn't work out well and I relocated to Hampton NH, and returned to fishing, now in the Atlantic Ocean. The Yankee Fisherman's' Coop in Seabrook NH is where my catch is sold daily along with the many other fine, hard-working fishermen who fish for ground fish, tuna, and lobster.I have been fortunate to be successful in the lobster fishing business during my long career. Sadly, climate change and over-regulation of the fisheries spell a dim future for a good livelihood in the future.There are other ways we all can love and appreciate the waters and their ecosystems.
