From Utah, he veered north through Idaho up to Helena, Montana, before taking to te waters of the Missouri and Marias rivers and riding through a rainstorm into Fort Benton. This epic trek was made to ensure the historical and geographical accuracy of the travels of his characters in the novel. Many of the novel's scenes describe actual ghost towns and historical sites visited by the author.
