Powell, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA, is an associate professor emerita and former Master of Occupational Therapy program director in the Division of Occupational Therapy at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. She holds three degrees fom the University of Washington: a Bachelor of Science in occupational therapy; a Master of Science in rehabilitation medicine; and an interdisciplinary Doctor of Philosophy degree in rehabilitation medicine, psychology, biostatistics, and education. Dr. Powell's research and teaching expertise is in adult neurological rehabilitation. She has been supported by a number of federal grants to better understand the lives of people who have sustained traumatic brain injury and to investigate telephone-based, problem-solving interventions for survivors of traumatic brain injury and their family and friend caregivers. Her research has also included studies of the assessment of saccadic eye movements in adults. Dr. Powell has authored numerous journal articles, chapters in occupational therapy and optometry textbooks, and consumer resources. She has copresented nationally with an optometrist/physiatrist team on assessing and treating visual impairments in adults with acquired brain injury. Before becoming a full-time faculty member in 2001, she provided occupational therapy services to children and adults with neurological disorders in a variety of clinical settings for more than 20 years.
