James M NovingerCDR James M. Novinger USNR (Ret) was born in central Pennsylvania from generations of Pennsylvania German and Scots-Irish stock. He graduated from Millersville University of Pennsylvania in 1976, earning a B.A. with a major in Earth Science (Geology) A career U.S. Navy officer, Jim retired from the Navy after 22 years and began working in his second professional field, that of environmental protection. This time, for over 20 years with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. His serious interest in family history was first awakened by conversations with older family members as they reminisced about their lives. Ultimately, his cousin, James G. Novinger's family tree book, Dewalt Novinger's Legacy provided the catalyst for Jim to become a full-fledged history nerd. He believes that, while as important as such trees are, they really serve as a skeleton upon which hang the stories, events, experiences, and behaviors that truly shape family history. Jim's passion is the detective work necessary in family history. To track down the origin of a family oral tradition and, in the process, correct the inevitable embellishments.
