HanniganJohn Hannigan is Professor of Sociology and Associate Chair, Graduate Studies (Sociology) at the University of Toronto, where he teaches courses in cultural policy, urban political economy and environmental sociology. He has written four books Environmental Sociology (1995, 2006, 2014), Fantasy City: Pleasure and Profit in the Postmodern City (1998), Disasters Without Borders: The International Politics of Natural Disasters (2012), and The Geopolitics of Deep Oceans (2015). Fantasy City was nominated for the 1999-2000 John Porter Award of the Canadian Sociology and Anthropology Association. Environmental Sociology has been translated into Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Portuguese. In his most recent book, The Geopolitics of Deep Oceans, Dr. Hannigan argues that our understanding of the deep depends on whether we see it primarily as a resource cornucopia, a global political chessboard, a shared commons, or a unique and threatened ecology. He is currently co-editing the SAGE Handbook of New Urban Studies (with Greg Richards) due to be published in 2017.
