H E Ned ShentonEdward H Shenton grew up on a farm outside of Philadelphia as only child of parents who were writers and artists. He attended the local public school then went to four years of a private boys school, The Haverford School; in June 1950 he enrolled at olby College, where he studied geology. Wanting to become a marine scientist he got an Masters' Degree at Texas A&M in Oceanography but took a position with the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in the International Geophysical Year satellite tracking program. He later became Chief of the twelve world wide tracking stations from 1958 to 1962. Aftrer his stint with the Smithsonian, he was hired by Westinghouse Underseas of Annapolis, Maryland to join the the Jacques Cousteau group in the Pacific as science director for the two man submersible Diving Saucer.He worked on the Greenland Ice Sheet Project from 1990 to 1993, drilling the deepest ice sheet core with the longest record of world climate change.
