G M R GutscheG. M. R. Gutsche was born on an island in the Baltic Sea. At the end of WWII, in early 1945, her family was urged by the German Army to leave their home because it was in the line of fire. The Russian Front had established itself only five kilometresaway. Gutsche and her family climbed into their horse-drawn buggy, leaving all else behind, and became refugees. They travelled to the next island, a little further west. Eventually, the Russians captured the island, and on the author's ninth birthday the war was finally over. Five years later the political situation in what was then East Germany became unbearable and the family had to flee again. In 1957, after completing her education in West Berlin at a Social Pedagogical Institute, Gutsche immigrated to Canada and is extremely thankful to call Canada home. Read More Read Less
