After studying at Gottingen and Bonn, he taught in gymnasia for thirteen years before university appointments at Konigsberg, Kiel, and then Halle-Wittenberg. He prouced a large body of work, but perhaps his most famous work is the grammar he coauthored with Albert Debrunner, 'A Greek Grammar of the New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature, ' later translated and edited by Robert W.
