Elyn's Ph.D. in cultural anthropology (Princeton University 1985) focused on the modern Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in Spain. Her book Following the Milky Way (2nd edition) was the first modern account by an American about walking the 500-mile-long pilgrimage trail. She also has a Master in Divinity (Iliff School of Theology 1997) and has studied a number of spiritual paths, including Sufism, Western Esoteric traditions, Kabbalah, and shamanism.
