The Cricket's Story, one of her earliest poems written as a young girl, has now become a children's book to pass o the timeless theme of her beautiful poem about a cricket's desire for happiness.She was born in 1915 in Montgomery, Alabama, the seventh child of Montgomery's long-time mayor, William Adams Gunter and his wife, Julia Scott Gunter. She married Bruce J. Downey, Jr. of Nashville, N.C. and raised two children with him in her new home, Jacksonville, NC. She died in 2007 leaving behind a legacy of love, beauty, and graciousness.
