Van Soest's career as an educator has spanned the teaching of high school English, elementary and preschool, undergraduate and raduate university courses as a professor, as well as Dean positions at two universities. She is currently Professor and Dean Emeritus at the University of Washington. Van Soest has been a professional writer for over thirty years, with ten books published, plus over fifty journal articles, essays and book chapters.
