In 30 years of African residence, the Smiths co-founded Daystar University in Nairobi, Kenya, trained nd supervised Bible translation teams, published a major Christian magazine (South Africa) and literacy materials in Ndebele and Shona (Zimbabwe), and counseled major development work in South Sudan. He chaired the Division of Intercultural Studies of Western Seminary, Portland, Oregon, USA.
