He grew up on an Iowa farm and now lives with his wife in Venice, California. His short stories have appeared in a umber of literary magazines, including TriQuarterly, The Georgia Review, and The Southwest Review. He has been a journalist, building contractor, and head of the Los Angeles-based Coalition to Ban Billboard Blight.
