David L. Brainard David L. Brainard was an American arctic explorer and soldier. He is best known for serving as first sergeant under Adolphus Greely on the ill-fated Lady Franklin Bay expedition. He was one of only six crew members to survive. His two memoirs,Outpost of the Lost and Six Came Back, are based on this experience.
