Dan MartinIn his 20's, Dan Martin quit an Aerospace career, got rid of his cookie-cutter suburban home, vehicles, boat, jet skies, burned his phone, computer and belongings (and wads of cash) and left society. For the next 8yrs he lived off-the-grid, 100% selfsufficient, entirely cut-off, not leaving his homestead once and not seeing or speaking with another person the entire time. There were no electric or water lines; no internet, cell or emergency services; no calendars, clocks or TVs; there wasn't even a road to the property. Dan built his home from available materials and lived on caught rain water, hydroponically-grown produce and hand-raised livestock. He made his own ethanol, solar and wind power, alcohol still, furniture, dishes, pots, pans, even an indoor swimming pool, eliminating mortgages, bills, expenses or need for money or income of any kind. Dan grew up in Detroit when it was the homicide capital of the world. The offspring of divorced parents, at 13 he went to live with his father and learned to hunt, track, trap and work with and train animals. At 18, he fought in The Gulf and was awarded several medals. Upon returning, he spent years volunteering with Habitat for Humanity and traveled throughout Latin America. He prepared himself by learning everything, receiving educations in Agriculture, Medicine and Engineering from various universities, while attending trade schools in heating/AC, electrical, and welding; as well as community workshops in woodworking, pottery, leather, glass working, and canning/preserving, and taking unpaid apprenticeships in masonry, construction, carpentry and metal working. One day he thought: Even though we're born in, maybe we don't need to continue as sheep. Maybe we could, stop... Leave. And so he split from the herd, leaving all comforts, materialism and capitalism behind. In 2010 Dan returned and moved to Mexico to form a non-profit providing relief to victims of natural and man-made catastrophes/crises. Dan now lives in a 6400sqft hand-built bunker/seed vault on an animal refuge/animal arch, consulting on the subject of societal collapse for Hollywood movies and prime time TV shows like - AMC's The Walking Dead, TNT's Falling Skies, NatGeo's Doomsday Preppers, Fox's Utopia and Discovery's The Colony. In 2012, he published his best seller, Apocalypse, How to Survive a Global Crisis, in 2018, The End, The Survivors, followed by his 3000-pager, Breaking The Grid, a complete guide to self-sufficiency. Dan's been the hot topic of CNN, MSNBC, Men's Journal, Men's Health, The Huffington Post, Esquire and The Travel Channel. And having actually been 'boots on the ground' in places like Haiti after the earthquake and cholera outbreaks, New Orleans after Katrina, Colombia during the floods, Japan for Fukushima, Detroit and Venezuela during their societal collapses, the Middle East during the war and Mexico during the cartel wars, and with 3 published books and over 100,000hrs in the field, Martin's widely considered one of the foremost experts on the topic. He knows firsthand the ins and outs of day-to-day life in environments when humanity is at its lowest and society stops providing for us. He possesses that on-site, eyewitness account, only imprinted on someone by actually being there, seeing firsthand the trauma and chaos-induced behaviors, reactions and horrific chain of events that unfold during, and in the aftermath. Through his books, Martin provides eye-opening views of us at our worst, and his insight into future events, forecasted by experiencing the same ones himself (history repeats) are incredible, at least, life saving at best. I think Dan says it best when he says: I'm not a writer, I didn't even learn to read until I was 17. I don't live life to write, I just write about my life.
