He headed the Times's news bureaus in Moscow, Cairo, Beijing, Ottawa, and Johannesburg; covered the United Natons; and reported from the former Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, the Balkans, the Middle East, China, Southeast Asia, Africa, South America, and Canada.
