When the Eight-Nation Alliance invaded Beijing, he moved to Shanghai and made a living by selling his paintings. He died in 1919 at the age of 64.Huang Shanshou was good at both painting and calligraphy. Traditional Chinese painting involves essentially the same techniques as calligraphy and is done with a brush dipped in black ink or colored pigments. As with calligraphy, the most popular materials on which paintings are made are paper and silk. The finished work can be mounted on scrolls, such as hanging scrolls or handscrolls.Huang Shanshou painted a vast variety of subjects ranging from figures, mountains and rivers, flowers and birds, and animals and insects. He vividly depicted the figures and events from the novel Dream of the Red Chamber with detailed brushstrokes. Huang Shanshou's paintings of Dream of the Red Chamber are highly valued by collectors.
