Her interest in writing local history began when she authored her first book, Pictorial History of Mono Hot Springs, California in 2003, which was followed by Phoebe's House: A Hearst Legay in 2016. Throughout forty years of collecting and selling antique scenic postcards, Steele wrote several articles for the hobby publication Barr's Postcard News.
