He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, and earns his living as an electronic engineer, with eleven patents to his name. His firs book, Once upon a Mulberry Field, is an award-winning novel set in Vietnam at the height of the war. It is followed by Rain Falling on Tamarind Trees, a travelogue of his 2016 visit to the ancestral homeland and a former Amazon #1 New Release in Vietnam Travel Guides.
