Bol MaywalBol Maywal is a US citizen born in the middle of the Second Sudanese Civil War in a displacement camp in El Haj Yousif, Sudan. The war erupted in 1983 and officially ended in 2005. In 1997, Bol and his family fled Sudan and lived in a United Nations UN) refugee camp in Egypt for several years. In 2001, Bol and family came to the US with assistance from the United Nations and Catholic Social Services, now called Catholic Charities. He entered elementary school unable to speak English and faced challenges as a refugee integrating into the local community. He persevered and earned his US citizenship on April 24, 2009. From these life experiences, Bol has dedicated himself to serving others. He is a peace scholar, a former NATO Peacemaker, and a US Army officer. He worked briefly as a case coordinator for the Catholic Charities refugee resettlement office. Bol hopes to be a proactive global peacebuilder. In 2013, Bol earned his bachelor's degree from Belmont Abbey College on an Army ROTC Scholarship, majoring in political science and minoring in military science. In 2015, as an officer in the US Army, he volunteered for a NATO Peace Operation Mission in Kosovo and was awarded a Non-Article 5 NATO Peace Medal in the service of peace and freedom. In early 2016, Bol was nominated by District 7680 as a candidate for a Rotary Peace Fellowship to study peace, conflict, and development at the University of Bradford in the United Kingdom. He graduated in 2019 with his master's degree and was named a Paul Harris Fellow. Bol is the author of A Mother's Promise: A Civil War Survivor and Her Pursuit of the American Dream, a special tribute to his mother who raised him to be the leader he is today. He hopes the book can serve as an example to other young men and provide encouragement to widows, single mothers, and mothers to be the best versions of themselves to their children. He hopes this book can shed a positive light on refugees and immigrants and their contributions to America. Bol believes that his mother's sacrifices contributed greatly to his success in life, and he is as proud of her as she is of him. Bol held numerous leadership positions to include deputy company commander with a unit in Georgia, United States. Bol hopes to go into politics, and he is determined to make a difference as a servant leader. Read More Read Less
