Bian AnBian An, better known as Ann Bennett Spence, has a bicultural and biracial background. Her father was from a Republican family in the Boston area, and her mother from a distinguished Chinese family in Beijing. Her parents' marriage in 1940 was a newsstory, not a wedding announcement, so unusual in Boston was marriage between whites and Chinese immigrants still banned from citizenship. Bian An was their first-born. In adulthood An(n) lived mainly in Cambridge MA and Palo Alto CA, and was married first to Michael Spence, and much later to Richard Bowers. She has three adult children. She was a managing director at a global investment firm, where she advised universities on governance and financial matters.As a 2018 DCI Fellow at Stanford University, she researched her mother's decision to flee Japanese-occupied Beijing, for America. An(n) authored Nancy Nianci: A Story of Wars, a historical novel based on her findings. Currently her writing focuses on short stories, historical fiction, essays, and mystery, exploring race, family fracture, catastrophe-and renewal.She lives in Exeter, NH and Boston, MA.
