Betty Irene DraytonThe late Betty Irene Drayton (nee West) was born in North Somercotes in 1925. She added a year to her age to join the A.T.S. early as a plane spotter in the Second World War and later qualified as a shorthand and typist teacher, then a nurse and a miwife. She loved nature, especially flowers and birds, and had a strong religious faith. From an early age, she enjoyed writing poems about life and her philosophy of it; some of these poems were published locally.
