Bernard Hinault
Born in Yffiniac, Brittany, Bernard Hinault was the last great French champion of the Tour de France. A proud Breton, he had the strength of character to assume leadership of the tight-knit peloton from an early age, and his five Tour wins lace him among the greatest cyclists of all time. One of the most self-possessed champions in Tour history, he remains a legend. Hinault vowed to retire aged 32 and did just that, riding his last Tour in 1986 and winning three stages, the King of the Mountains, and lending a hand to Greg LeMond en route to the American's first Tour win.
