She specializes in the health and medical humanities and nineteenth-century British literature With Dr. Rishi Goyal, she is co-founder and co-editor of the online journal Synapsis: A Journal of Health Humanities (medicalhealthhumanities.com). Hegele's book manuscript, Romantic Autopsy: Literary Form and Medical Reading, examines how Romantic poetry and prose adopt formal methods from emergent fields in medical science and argues that this medico-literary interchange sets the scene for the modern practice of symptomatic reading. Her scholarly articles are published in European Romantic Review, Romanticism, Romantic Circles Pedagogy Commons, Partial Answers, Gender and Education, The Byron Journal, and Persuasions.
