She specializes in the health and medical humanities and nineteenth-century British literature With Dr. Rishi Goyal, she is co-founder and co-editor of the online journal Synapsis: A Journal of Health Humanities (medicalhealthhumanities.com). Hegele's book manuscript, Romantic Autopsy: Literary Form and Medical Reading, examines how Romantic poetry and prose adopt formal methods from emergent fields in medical science and argues that this medico-literary interchange sets the scene for the modern practice of symptomatic reading.
