Annie Devenish

Dr Annie Devenish (Researcher, African Ombudsman Research Centre (AORC) School of Law, University of KwaZuluNatal, South Africa) is a South African historian working on the history of feminist politics and organisation in India and South Africa. Se is particularly interested in the intersections between gender, development and democracy in the Global South, and identity politics in the context of political transition.

A graduate in history from the University Natal (2001), Devenish finished her PhD from the University of Oxford (2014) under the supervision of Dr Faisal Devji. Her research focused on the interaction between gender, citizenship and identity in independent India.

Prior to commencing her PhD, Dr Devenish spent two years teaching undergraduate history at the University of Cape Town and subsequently taught history for a short while at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Her publications, both forthcoming and present, focus on gender, the informal economy, traditional health practitioners in Southern Africa, and feminism and development in India and South Africa.

Dr Devenish currently works as a researcher at the African Ombudsman Research Centre within the School of Law at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
