He served in the Navy as a edical officer, and now cares for veterans at a V.A. facility in Green Bay, Wisconsin. His 10-year-old son has required him to read all of the Oz and Unfortunate Events books aloud more than once, while his wife has filled the house and yard with animals of all kinds, including an undisclosed number of chickens.
