Allan H SmithAllan H. Smith (1913-1999) earned a doctorate in anthropology at Yale University in 1941. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy as a Japanese language specialist and was awarded a Purple Heart. An expert in both Pacific Islands and Plateau ndian ethnography, Smith taught in Washington State University's Department of Anthropology before becoming the university's Academic Vice President in 1969, a position he held until retirement in 1979.
